Don't slather it on, but rub it in using a small piece of burlap until the section you're working on feels warm. I use pure raw linseed oil (kept in a similar small jar and labeled) and may apply anywhere between 5 to 20 additional applications, depending on what the wood will absorb. Use a fresh rag for each session and toss the old dirty one in a water-filled zip-lock bag. from the wood without affecting the finish. The mineral spirits helps clean the dirt, etc. I'll rub in three applications of this mixture using a small cotton rag with a day or two to dry in between coats. Just pour them together in any small glass jar available, secure with an airtight lid, and label the jar. I wipe off any dust and then use a diluted mixture of 1 part Raw Linseed Oil to 2 parts Odorless Mineral Spirits. ^^^This!!!Good suggestions from everyone here.Ĭlean the wood first. Note: Rags soaked with linseed/ tung oils can ignite if confined in a pile and left to sit. ![]() I just wrote up my procedure for giving stocks an oil finish in the gunsmithing section. Don't leave a surface coat or it will get sticky. Repeat as needed if the stock seems very dry. THEN RUB IT ALL OFF and let it sit overnight or for a few days. Keep reapplying on the spots that soak all of the oil in for 15-30 more min. For maintenance you want to rub it on and let it soak in. A lot of hardware store finishes like Minway and Formbys say Tung oil but they have little if any Tung oil. I've cleaned /refinished enough oil soaked surplus stocks to know.įor a military stock use Boiled linseed oil or PURE Tung oil. Milsurp wood stocks-maintenance & preservationīefore you can post: click the register link above to proceed. They're perfectly sealed now and will never have to be taken apart, so it's not worth returning on their own. One was missing a seal and the other had threads that were too tight to the AA fill adapter. If I do return it, I'll also probably return the 2 Air Venturi fill adapters, as I had to use PTFE tape to get them to seal properly. I hate to pack up the entire rifle and accessories to send it back, but I guess I'll have to. I had sent them an email a week ago and they never responded to it, so I'm not hopeful. I'll wait a day or 2 to see if PA responds to my email. I was thinking that the stock might be clamped at the pistol grip during the stippling operation and that this one was clamped too tightly. The rifle box also was sealed with the S/N sticker on the sealing tape, so it was new from the factory. Neither the rifle box from the AA factory nor the outer box from PA had any evidence of flexing or crushing. ![]()
